Day # 1 - Veronica Mars

Fabulous Fictional Females Fandom Fiesta February

Day 1 – Veronica Mars.

In a month I intend to dedicate to our favorite, fantastic, fabulous, fictional females, there was really only one I could begin with.

As I said last year: Veronica Mars was made for this sort of meme.

She's smart, sassy, snarky, funny, brave, determined, loyal, not willing to be sidelined by anyone or anything, talented, creative, and above all else, REAL.

Sure, there were issues with some of the character development and plot lines in the latter part of the series. But let's celebrate and remember her for what she was and for what she gave to all of us.

I mean, even the theme song still gives me a happy fannish shiver.

Veronica Mars.

It's hard to determine the exact moment she stole my heart. (I tend to point to the pilot scene in the Camelot parking lot - (Veronica on stakeout. The rumbling bikes of the PCHers. "Car trouble, miss?" "Backup, chill!" The introduction of the tazer. ... and then of course that scene also kicks off into a flashback that provides powerful emotional backstory.))

Veronica Mars is one of the rare shows that I not only recall the first episode I saw, and my emotions and thoughts during my first viewing, but I can also recall the experience of that entire first season. The anticipation and enjoyment week by week, falling for the characters and chasing after the plotlines.

I still remember falling in love.

And, yes, I'm aware how incredibly lame and cheesy that sounds, but I've never had a fandom experience like Veronica Mars - before or since. And I don't think I'm alone in that.

For those of us who were there back in the very beginning, watching a show about a tiny blonde spitfire - on UPN, of all things! - and then later in the VM4 and such, - I think "falling in love" is a pretty accurate way to describe what it was like.

And I still love her, Veronica Mars, (both the show and the character) dearly, flaws and all.

I think I'd forgotten for a while, but while "researching" to make this post, it all came back.

Oh man. *sigh* Do I ever miss her.

What do you miss/love most about Ms. Mars?

I miss her perfectly played and perfectly written father-daughter relationship.

And her general awesomeness.

About the only thing I miss more than Veronica Mars is the Veronica Mars-Keith Mars relationship.

Her general awesomeness is indeed very great.

I miss the warm fuzzy feeling I got when the theme song started.

Oh I know! I'd forgotten quite how much I missed it until I went hunting for clips and quotes and I clicked a link and the theme song started up ...and my heart clenched in long-lost warm fuzzies.

Oh Veronica! Now I want to rewatch all of my DVDs. I love that she could always take care of herself. Okay, occasionally she needed help, but mostly she was perfectly capable. That was a happy thing to see every week.

Also, on the shallow end of the pool I loved her wardrobe.

Now I want to rewatch all of my DVDs.

And this is simply not feasible, especially since I've already laid out a follow-up plan to squee over 27 OTHER fantastic female characters, .... can you sense my dilemma?

However, I sense a massive rewatch marathon beginnning sometime after March 1.

Sigh. Me too! I have never loved a TV show or TV Character quite like I did Veronica Mars.

Yeah, I know. And preparing this post has made me miss her all the more.

I was just considering re-watching Ms. Mars the next time J leaves me. I think falling is love is a perfect description. I immediately became OBSESSED and since I started about halfway through the first season, I was frantically trying to find all the earlier eps.

Then the finale fell right after my college finals, and I think I was spending more time trying to figure out who killed Lilly than I spent studying and/or writing papers. Ah, true love at its finest.

I think falling is love is a perfect description.
It really, really was like that, wasn't it?

I've only let myself rewatch the pilot so far (that's all I have time for!) but I have been rereading some of Couch Baron's recaps and remembering exactly how obsessed and excited and paranoid and gleeful we all were back then.

I still remember falling in love.

Chills. It was like that. And I remember too.

What do I miss most about her? The way she would suck it up and play through the pain because she was going to find out who murdered her best friend even if it killed her. I love her most in the moment when she braces herself before doing something emotionally difficult. I miss rooting for her.
